Does paid coverage provide the same credibility as independent editorial coverage?
In brief
Paid coverage can provide reach and information, but it is not the same as an independent editorial judgment. Readers need to understand the relationship behind the placement.
Check the article's commissioning, authorship and editorial process. Identify sponsorship, supplied copy, affiliate interests and other relevant connections, and distinguish those arrangements from independent reporting or an editorial endorsement.
The assessment records the publisher, author, commercial relationship, disclosure, and evidence behind the claims. A paid article can contain accurate research; an independently commissioned article can contain an error. Independence and accuracy are related but separate checks.
Advertising should not be presented as independent praise. Repeating the same supplied claim across paid placements also does not create multiple independent confirmations. Useful public evidence makes its origin clear and allows readers to examine the actual support.
