How can GitHub show an engineer’s or company’s actual technical contribution?

In brief

Make the work understandable, attributable and usable. A repository or technical profile becomes evidence when a reader can see the problem addressed, the contribution made and the project’s current state.

Use the profile to connect the right person or organization with relevant projects. GitHub supports a profile README and pinned work. Select contributions that demonstrate the claimed capability, and explain the person’s role instead of implying that every project in an organization was built by its executive. Link the same factual identity used in the executive biography.

For each important repository, document what it does, how to try it, its limitations, supported versions, license and where users can get help. Identify maintainers and distinguish a working release from an experiment, fork or archived project. Meaningful issue discussions, reviews and changes can show the reasoning behind a technical claim.

Keep documentation and project status aligned with the published work. Stars, commits and followers describe activity or attention; they do not establish the quality of the implementation. Do not expose confidential code or customer material to fill a portfolio. Explain a restricted contribution through an authorized technical account or demonstration when public code cannot carry the evidence.
