What is the difference between pushing down a search result and removing it from the index?
In brief
Rank displacement changes where a result appears for a particular search. Deindexing changes whether the URL is held in the search index. Publisher removal changes the source itself. Those outcomes require different evidence.
A page can disappear from the first results for a name yet remain discoverable through a topic, quotation, or different name combination. Record the relevant searches, location, date, and result URL so movement is not mistaken for removal. Google's description of Search separates indexing from serving results: an indexed page is not guaranteed to appear for any particular query.
For a site you control, use Search Console's URL Inspection report to inspect Google's indexed version. For an outside article, record the exact queries, results, dates, and publisher status. Compare those observations over time, keeping the publisher's removal date separate from the dates when search processing updates appear.
Choose the outcome that addresses the actual problem. Assess Accurate alternative assets by the information they give researchers. Refresh stale previews and assess qualifying legal content through the appropriate removal process. Evaluate index status and subsequent appearances of the original URL separately from the publication of additional pages.
