How should reputation management work alongside public relations?

In brief

Public relations and reputation management connect through shared facts and audience concerns, while retaining distinct responsibilities. Coverage is one input into the public information environment, not a complete measure of reputation.

Assign responsibilities for media relationships, announcements, spokesperson preparation, and later audience research. Define how PR teams and reputation specialists will coordinate company pages, profiles, coverage, and generated answers. Give each source and channel an accountable owner within the engagement.

Coordination is most valuable before major changes and when recurring misconceptions appear. A shared factual brief prevents an announcement, sales page, and executive biography from presenting incompatible accounts. Findings from search and AI can also reveal questions a press announcement did not answer.

A practical arrangement identifies who verifies facts, publishes updates, requests corrections, and approves sensitive responses. It also defines how success will be assessed after the initial coverage, including whether important readers can find and understand the current account.
