The Cost of Being Unstructured
Your best writing about yourself may be invisible to the systems that describe you. Not suppressed — invisible, in the specific sense that it cannot be parsed into a claim, so it is never retrieved as one.
A beautifully written About page is, to a retrieval system, an unstructured blob of prose from a source with an obvious interest in its own portrayal. It is read, discounted, and largely set aside in favour of anything that states the same facts in a parseable form from a source with less obvious motive.
Two kinds of information
There is information a system can extract a claim from, and information it cannot. The distinction is mechanical. Founded in 2016 by two engineers in a converted warehouse is a lovely sentence and a poor data source — it requires inference, and inference is where systems become conservative.
The same fact expressed as a structured property is unambiguous, machine-verifiable, and cheap to trust. Systems reach for it first, every time, and will prefer it even when your prose is more accurate and more current.
Where the loss shows up
The symptom is a company that is well documented on its own site and consistently mis-described everywhere else. Everyone assumes a hostile process is at work. Usually nothing hostile is happening at all — the accurate version simply exists in a form nothing can consume, and the inaccurate version exists in a form everything can.
This is the most fixable failure in the entire stack, and the most frequently unaddressed, because fixing it is an engineering task that sits in nobody's reputation budget.
Prose persuades people. Structure persuades the systems that reach people first.
The remedy
Mark up the claims you want retrieved. Ensure the structured version and the prose version agree exactly, because a discrepancy resolves in favour of neither and simply lowers confidence in both. Put the load-bearing facts somewhere independent and citable in addition to your own site.
None of this replaces good writing. It just ensures that the systems assembling an answer about you have something to work with besides someone else's summary of you from three years ago.
